South Hornby School - Rakamaomao

The New Teaching Block; named as Rakamaomao at South Hornby School, expands the school with 2 new co-teaching hubs. The design is sympathetic to the existing buildings that were developed in 2017 but brings a upgraded degree of heating, ventilation, and daylighting to create a comfortable and healthy environment for students.

The new teaching hub at South Hornby School is named after the winds from the North and South, Rakamaomao symbolises adaptability and connection.
It sits within a whakapapa of four winds already present at Te Manu Tukutuku, linking this new space to the wider school environment and its stories.
The name for the building itself; Te Manu Tukutuku was gifted by Ngāi Tahu and means “The Kite” used for sending messages in this area.
